Naptime is that sacred hour (or two, if you’re lucky) that can make and break a day. For Vera (and I think most kids, too) it’s about her personality and the environment we create before we even get started. It’s making sure we have a routine and a nice, comfortable space she feels she can rest in, so she gets all the benefits of amazing sleep (growing, resting, letting me work a little while she sleeps, etc).
Lunch is just the perfect segue into napping – a full belly makes for a sleepy baby! I think the eating schedule she follows is one of the most important factors that impacts when she sleeps. We’ve actually always followed a pretty set eating schedule for her, since it helps us adapt her schedule to ours and get her body used to eating and resting at the same times as we do.
After lunch I clean her up so she is nice and fresh, including washing her hands and brushing her teeth. I always look for fun details that make her excited to wash up, and it makes the process much easier along the way!
Next, I push to do something non-screen related – since sometimes she plays on the phone or tablet; instead, I try to read for 15-20 minutes, so it calms her down and also relaxes her mind more easily than videos.
Most importantly, though, I try to make sure her surroundings are not only clean but also fun and match her personality. She’s always been very aware of everything that surrounds her – sometimes she even sees details that Mr. P and I completely miss (especially in stores! Ahem, all chocolates that ever existed anywhere -giggles-). Since she is so aware, though, we were super excited to get these JumpOff Jo crib sheets, which are fun, playful, and super comfy! They are made with all-natural cotton, and their designs fascinated Vera, so much so that as soon as I showed them to her (I kid you not) she wanted to throw them on her crib!
These are much more than your average sheets, though, not only because of their beautiful designs but also because they come with a pack of milestone memory cards that let you have a little extra fun during nap time! The milestone cards can be used for monthly photos as baby grows or to capture precious moments with original phrases. These sheets truly made her feel much more comfortable in her space and are very durable, too, which Vera likes since she is obsessed with this one with giraffes and doesn’t want to change it anytime soon! Oh, and they’re very easy to find and ship on Amazon.com! They have this design as well as a new one, Lionhearted in Blue (you can check it out in the link above).
What else do you do to get your little one settled down for naptime? I’d love to read about it in the comments!
Stay Fabulous and Kind
