Oh Lola

Vera turned 6 months old this week and in celebration of the big half-year birthday I’ve decided to dedicate several posts to mommy and me lifestyle! These posts are all based on my experience and will show a few of the things I’ve used that have worked wonderfully. I’m really not an expert but I love sharing the tips and tricks I’ve learned in the last six months.

One of the most fun aspects of pregnancy is the preparation – thinking of the clothes, the nursery, and all of the things your baby will need when he finally gets here. I enjoyed that stage so much, but the truth is that it can get a little confusing and that’s why I made a list of the 10 most important things – my “must haves” – in Vera’s room, which help make every momma’s life a little easier. This list only has what I’ve used every day, during the first 6 months of being a Mom. If the list changes over time then I’ll make another post to share the latest as Vera’s grows and grows!

Vera cumplió 6 meses esta semana y en celebración de sus 6 meses he decidido hacer varios posts dedicados a bebés y maternidad. Estos posts están basados en mi experiencia y en mostrarles un poco de las cosas que yo he usado y que en realidad me han funcionado. Yo la verdad no soy experta pero me encanta compartirles mis datos y tips de lo que he aprendido en estos 6 meses.

Una de las partes más divertidas del embarazo es la preparación, pensar en la ropa, en el cuarto, en todas las cosas que va a necesitar tu bebé cuando finalmente llegue al mundo. Yo lo disfruté mucho, pero la verdad es que puede ser un poco confuso, por eso hice una lista de las 10 cosas más importantes y que más uso, mis “must haves”, en el cuarto de Vera, cosas que creo que nos hacen la vida más fácil a las mamás. Esta lista está enfocada en las que he usado sin falta en los primero 6 meses de mi vida de mamá, si las cosas cambian más adelante les prepararé otro post.

Diaper Pail: This, quite honestly, is the best invention of all time! This is simply a trash can for diapers, but they completely contain all smell and the diapers themselves. They last about a week before you have to change the bag and to me it’s the most essential of all the essentials. I have the Diaper Genie, but there are several brands and prices, which go from $20-$80 depending on the brand. If you are a first-time mom (like me) and you’re wondering whether to go with this product or not, don’t doubt it for a second!

Diaper Pail: Esto es de verdad la mejor invención de todos los tiempos, son basureros especiales para los pañales, suprimen el olor y la visión del resto de basura, duran aproximadamente una semana antes de que tengas que cambiar la bolsa y es para mí el esencial más esencial de todos. El mío es el Diaper Genie, pero hay muchas marcas y los precios varían entre $30 y $80 dependiendo de la marca. Si son mamás primerizas (como es mi caso) y están dudando si usar o no este producto, no lo duden y agréguenlo a su lista.

Drawer Organizers: Organizers are a blessing! The idea is basic and simple but they make your life 10 times easier. They help better distribute your space, and in general they just make everything look more clean and organized. I have them in all of Vera’s drawers, for clothes, personal care items (diapers, creams, medicine), and also for her blankets, sheets, and other minor things. Since baby things are so small, these help you keep everything separate and organized, 80% of the time you have to look for something with a baby you are rushed, so it’s just so much more convenient if you know exactly where everything is. The separation between the organizers makes everything visually accessible and ready to easily grab.

Organizadores de gavetas: Estos organizadores son una bendición, la idea es básica y sencilla pero te hace la vida 10 veces más fácil, te ayuda a distribuir tu espacio y en general a que todo sea más cómodo y organizado. Yo las tengo en todas sus gavetas, para la ropa, para sus cosas de cuidado personal (pañales, cremas, medicinas) y también para sus cobijas sábanas y demás. Como las cosas de bebés son pequeñas esto te ayuda a tener todo separado y organizado, el 80% de las veces que vas a buscar algo con un bebé vas a estar apurada así que es mucho más conveniente si sabes claramente donde está y la separación con estos organizadores hace que visualmente esté todo bastante accesible y a la mano.

Rocking Chair: Depending on how often you plan on using the baby’s room the first 6 months, it will most likely be indispensable to have a rocking chair. In my case Vera has slept in her room since she turned 3 months old and she always takes naps in her crib, and the rocking chair has always been our go-to for her to fall asleep. It’s also where she eats 90% of the time. We use it so often I really couldn’t imagine the nursery without it. I recommend finding the most comfortable option possible because you’ll sit there a lot those first 6 months.

Rocking Chair: Dependiendo de qué tanto pretendan usar el cuarto del bebé, los primeros 6 meses les va a ser indispensable tener una silla mecedora. En mi caso Vera duerme en su cuarto de noche desde los 3 meses y siempre duerme la siesta en su cuarto y la mecedora es nuestro go-to para dormirla desde siempre, además es donde come el 90% de las veces. La usamos mucho y la verdad no me imagino el cuarto sin ella. Yo recomiendo buscar algo cómodo, lo más cómodo posible porque allí vas a pasar sentada mucho mucho tiempo esos primeros 6 meses.

Baby Monitor: As I mentioned earlier, Vera sleeps in her room so using a monitor is a must. Some monitors track sound only, which seems like enough to me, but the one I have includes both video and voice capabilities. I really do think a monitor that tracks sound only would be enough, though. But if you’re willing to make the investment, having the option to watch your baby on video is good too, since it’s very convenient to be able to see her and make sure she’s OK, that she hasn’t rolled over, and that she’s in a recommended position.

Baby Monitor: Como les mencioné antes Vera duerme sola en su cuarto así que el uso de un monitor es indispensable. Existen sólo de voz, lo cual sinceramente me parece suficiente, este que yo tengo es de pantalla y voz pero la verdad es que creo que si solo fuese de voz sería suficiente. Igual si les interesa hacer la inversión no está mal, es bastante conveniente poder verla para asegurarte de que está bien, de que no se ha volteado y que está en la posición recomendada.

Dock’A ‘Tot: This is one of my favorite baby products and I promise the investment is worth it. It’s a co-sleeper, but Vera sleeps in it even when she’s in her room – I put it inside her crib and she loves sleeping there. It’s also the ideal size and comfortable to travel with, so when we went to New York recently we took it with us and it was perfect. The last few weeks Vera has been a little sick, and thanks to the Dock’A ‘Tot she can sleep in between us in bed without any risk or danger. It’s a simple but very fabulous product, besides it comes in beautiful colors and designs, and for me that’s always a big plus!

Dock’A ‘Tot: Este es uno de mis productos favoritos para bebés y de verdad les prometo que vale la pena la inversión, es un co-sleeper, pero Vera duerme en el incluso cuando está en su cuarto, yo lo pongo dentro de su cuna y ella es feliz, ama dormir ahí. Es suficientemente pequeño y cómodo para viajar, así que cuando nos fuimos de viaje lo llevamos con nosotros y fue perfecto. Las últimas semanas ha estado un poco enferma y gracias al Dock’A ‘Tot puede dormir con nosotros en nuestra cama sin ningún tipo de peligro. Es un producto simple pero súper fabuloso, además viene en diseños y colores bellísimos y conmigo eso siempre es un plus!

Changing Station: Here is where we change Vera’s diapers, where we dress her, and where we dry her off after a bath. Having a station for all of this has been ideal – I have everything I need in the first drawer, so I don’t have to leave while I’m changing her to look for anything. On one side I have my diaper genie and on the other I have her laundry basket. This space is the most practical and productive in the whole room.

Changing Station: Acá es donde le cambiamos los pañales a Vera, donde la vestimos y la secamos después de salir del baño. Tener una estación para todo esto ha sido ideal, tengo todo a la mano en las primeras gavetas así que no tengo que alejarme de ella mientras la estoy cambiando para buscar nada, de un lado tengo mi Diaper Genie y del otro mi cesta de la ropa sucia. Este espacio en el cuarto es el más práctico y más productivo diría yo.

Changing Pad: On top of the changing station I put the changing pad, and to a few veteran mommas out there this might sound obvious, but the truth is if you don’t know about these kinds of things it’s very important to learn about it. This is basically a big, comfortable cushion, where the baby lays for pretty much everything. I even give Vera medicine, clean her ears, clean out her nose when she’s congested, and I change her diaper and clothes – EVERYTHING here. It really is an awesome product and very affordable. Actually when Vera was a newborn I made a smaller, similar changing station to have everything within arm’s reach in our bedroom. It’s the most comfortable and convenient pad ever, and one of my “mom hacks” is that, underneath the pad, I put an anti-sliding base, which they sell everywhere, I just cut a piece to fit the size of my changing pad and that keeps the pad stationery on the dresser.

Changing Pad: Sobre la estación está un changing pad, a algunas mamás ya experimentadas esto les puede sonar obvio, pero la verdad que si no sabes nada de este tipo de cosas es importante saberlo. Este es un pad grande y cómodo que es donde se acuesta el bebé para básicamente todo, yo incluso le doy medicina, le limpio los oídos, le extraigo la congestión de la nariz, le cambio el pañal y la ropa, TODO ahí. Es maravilloso y súper económico, de hecho al principio cuando estaba recién nacida creé una mini versión de esto en mi propio cuarto para tener todo a la mano. Es lo más conveniente y seguro del mundo, uno mis “mom hacks” es que debajo del pad, para que no se deslice, puse un anti-resbalante de alfombra de piso que venden en todos lados. Lo recorté al tamaño del pad y eso hace que quede fijo sobre el dresser.

Toy Storage: This is, for now, a small area that serves as a storage space and a bookshelf. All of her favorite toys are in pink boxes that slide into the shelves, which are easy to take out and put back at the end of the day. Babies love playing even when they’re just a few months old, so create a space where they do that and easily put away all of their toys so you can keep the room as organized as possible.

Toy Storage: Este es un espacio por lo pronto algo pequeño que hace las veces de storage y biblioteca, es indispensable. En las gavetas están todos sus juguetes que usamos a diario y al final del día se vuelven a guardar ahí. Los bebés desde muy pequeños aman jugar así que piensa en eso y prepara un espacio para que puedan hacerlo y por supuesto un espacio para guardar todo y que se mantenga el cuarto lo más organizado posible.

Laundry Basket: You have no idea how many clothes a baby goes through in a day! From Day 1 on changing their clothes is a constant, many times a day in some cases, so get a good sized laundry basket and make it easy to reach. I keep mine on one side of the dresser and I love how convenient it is.

Laundry Basket: No tienen idea cuánta ropa ensucia un bebé, desde el primer día los cambios de ropa son continuos y muchas veces al día, así que compra una cesta grande y tenla a la mano. Yo la tengo ubicada a uno de los lados del dresser y amo lo conveniente que es.

Dresser: This is another essential item which may seem completely obvious, but I added it just in case to emphasize its importance. It’s critical to have a space to put all of your baby’s clothes, towels, and blankets. I made sure mine was long and tall enough so I could comfortably put the changing station on top. Again, my idea was to make it as easy for us as possible, and I don’t regret making that a priority for a minute. Her room is just as comfortable and practical for Vera as it is for us.

Dresser: Este es otro de los esenciales que se les pueden hacer algo obvios, pero por si acaso lo agregué acá, es súper indispensable tener espacio para guardar toda su ropa y sus cosas. Yo escogí que el mío fuese suficientemente largo y de la altura correcta para que me permitiera agregar el changing station encima. Repito: mi idea siempre fue que todo fuese lo más practico posible  y que me hiciera la vida lo más fácil posible y la verdad no me arrepiento, su cuarto es cómodo y práctico tanto para ella como para nosotros.
