5 Things you Need to Know Before Visiting Frida Kahlo’s Museum in Coyoacan

5 things you need to know before visiting Frida Kahlo's museum. Wardrobe. Coyoacan Mexico City!

This is the first post related to our trip to Mexico, and rightfully so since the whole trip began
with the idea of going to visit this historic museum, which has special meaning to me. But I
should also say that not just the museum but all of Mexico left me with a very particular
experience of the energy you feel everywhere you go – it’s so strong it’s almost tangible. Mexico
City is beautiful and has a unique personality in its streets, its smells, its flavors, and I always
thought it would be fun to visit but in the end it felt magical. So here’s a quick summary of 5
things I think you should know if you’re going to visit the Frida Kahlo Museum, which was
Frida’s home for more than 25 years.

1. The first thing is it’s very close to the city center. In fact, it’s only 30 minutes away from
the heart of the city, in an area called Coyoacán. You can get there in Uber for $6-7.
2. You should buy your ticket online before going, so you don’t have to wait in line for an
hour and a half just to get in. You can get the tickets a day or two in advance (generally)
to book a specific time. The museum is also closed on Mondays so keep that in mind
when you make the trip, and the tickets cost 200 pesos which is about $10 dollars.
3. If you want to take pictures you’ll have to buy a pass to do so, which costs 30 pesos.
Before going into the museum you’ll have the chance to buy the photo pass (you’re not
allowed to record any video, though), and you’ll also have to leave any purses, bags, or
backpacks you have, too.
4. If you go with your kids and you have a stroller (or carriola in Mexico), you’re only
allowed to access the garden area and you’re not allowed with the stroller inside the
actual house. This was a little inconvenient for us since Vera was asleep when we got to
the museum, and we had to tour the house in pieces.
5. If you’re a Frida Kahlo fan or have a weakness for art, this museum is an absolute MUST
SEE. It has a special and magical energy, and in every corner of the house there’s some
intimate, personal detail – it feels poetic just witnessing the way they lived. You’ll
absolutely love it!
6. Bonus tip: there’s an artisanal market just a few blocks away, and you can buy food and
choose from tons of souvenirs. It’s so beautiful and gives you an authentic Coyoacán
experience.
I hope this post helps you to plan your visit and that it inspires you to go if you haven’t been yet!
If you’ve already been please let me know of any tips you have in the comments and if you have
any questions let me know!
